Village Centre – Aravis Mountain Range

France, La clusaz
Located in the heart of the Aravis mountain range, the redevelopment project for La Clusaz village centre aims to revitalise one of the resort’s main gateways while preserving its architectural and landscape identity.Historically shaped by mountain agriculture, followed by the development of tourism and winter sports, the village possesses a distinctive heritage that the project seeks to enhance through a contemporary urban and architectural intervention. The ambition is to create a new focal point for village life, strengthening connections between the different neighbourhoods and improving the quality of public spaces. The urban composition is organised around a dynamic pedestrian route, punctuated by public squares, pathways, and new visual openings towards the surrounding landscape.By rethinking pedestrian and vehicular circulation, the project promotes greater accessibility and continuity between the village’s various spaces, while naturally responding to the existing topography. The programme introduces a diverse mix of uses, bringing together hotel accommodation, residential units, retail spaces, restaurants, and public facilities.
This diversity of uses contributes to the vibrancy of the village centre, creating new spaces for social interaction and gathering, designed for both residents and visitors. Active ground floors, opening onto public spaces, enhance the attractiveness of the site and integrate the project into the everyday life of the resort throughout the seasons. From an architectural perspective, the project offers a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Alpine architecture. The building volumes echo the distinctive silhouettes of mountain chalets, while the use of timber and stone establishes a dialogue with the existing built environment. The variation in building heights and volumes, pitched roofs, and façade treatments creates a coherent architectural ensemble that respects the scale of the village and its natural surroundings.Through this transformation, the project aims to redefine the identity of La Clusaz’s entrance and create a vibrant, welcoming urban environment deeply rooted in its surroundings. It brings together tourism development, quality of experience, and the preservation of Alpine identity, through an approach that carefully considers the architectural heritage and landscapes that define the resort.
