Frugality and Freshness
BordeauxDrawing inspiration from traditional Bordeaux échoppes, the facade highlights solid stone, a bio-based material that can be reused. At the heart of the project, the connection between the hotel and the urban space was also central to the landscaping design, with the ambition of offering a green space to both guests and passersby. Guided by the Label Frugal Bordelais, the project focuses closely on sustainability issues. Thus, from the first floor upward, the building is structured around a modular, three-dimensional timber construction system. The building is divided into 90 off-site prefabricated modules, which are delivered to the site and assembled. The distinctive triangular plot organizes and constrains the space along walls between 2 m and 2.50 m high, guiding and framing visual perspectives. Because the building is long and linear, the rooms are dual-aspect, thereby promoting natural ventilation. To protect against noise pollution, they open toward the interior courtyard and thus benefit from the surrounding vegetation.
As for the drop-arm awnings, they ensure comfort in summer by protecting against intense heat. The landscaping project fits into the urban context of a townhouse district with a limited presence of nature. Serving as a daily living space for the hotel and restaurant, as well as a potential resource for the city, this garden space can become a real source of freshness for its users and the surrounding neighborhoods. This fight against the urban heat island effect is achieved primarily through the choice of materials, vegetation and shading, and the presence of water. Thus, the project develops an entirely permeable materiality for the interior courtyard, virtuous stormwater management, and the enhancement of the green network.
