Unity and Mutability
ParisAn exceptional opportunity at an exceptional address to rethink a building so that it finds its rightful place in this neighborhood in the very heart of Paris. It will be a matter of combining the building’s expressiveness with its future use in the background, by conceiving the marriage of history and new uses, of luminosity and plaster, of the plot’s verticality, of the roof and its capacity to welcome natural light into its core. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate the value of a rehabilitation with environmental virtues: a dry-sector post-and-beam superstructure with steel decking, and a design-build approach fully integrating the notion of mutability. Above all, 277 rue Saint-Honoré aims both to inspire dreams and assert its identity while re-engaging with the neighborhood’s history.
The project contributes to the revitalization of the block and the neighborhood by offering controlled and harmonized architecture and green spaces. Unseemly elements present in the heart of the block, such as the fire escape and the dilapidated canvas access arbor, are removed to make way for high-quality, transparent, and delicate architecture that improves the quality of facing views. 277 Saint-Honoré offers several green spaces developed across multiple levels, including an in-ground patio that will serve as a biodiversity relay for the neighborhood and help combat the urban heat island effect in this predominantly mineral environment. “The architectural project creates unity between two buildings and brings a true green lung to the heart of the plot.”
